Devin natera says..... Over Break I read pages 24 to 59 In which an African American family is living in Chicago during the time period of World War 2. In which starts off with The family having a dispute and Ruth is treating everyone so cruel. Then Travis wants Fifty cents but they wont give it to him. He recommends to his family that he could carry groceries after school in order to earn it. Then Ruth and Walter engage in a conversation about Willy Harris and then speak about opening up a Liquor store. Then Walter says something interesting "One rich group of men tied to people Women with small minds".

What I started to pay attention to was the way that the characters talk to each other in this book.I found this interesting because husband and wife don't really talk to each other with all those insults that were used in the argument of Walter and Ruth. Another interesting thing that I saw was the value of money in this book. Ruth was making a big deal over 50 cents but then I realized that in the 1950s 50 cents was worth way more than what it is worth today.l and it was shocking to me because today we see 50 cents as no big deal.

In the beginning we see how Ruth and Walter argue about little things like the way Walter wanted his eggs and how Walter gave money to his son money. It seemed as if they were poor and Ruth was tired of being poor.

Over the break i read that many important things that are in book like that the time is in 1959 and it mostly shows the struggle of a family economically and it gets even harder when one of the characters gets pregnant. Walter lee the protagonist of the story now makes of a decision of in investment in a liquor store which he believes would help his family economically

Over the brake I learned about the Younger family that the family it's struggling financially. Mama had a check coming in that was a large quantity in Saturday. Walter Lee wanted the money to invest it in his business that he's just starting with his friends. Beneatha 'wanted'('' because she wasn't making any plans with it like Walter Lee, but the money still would help her a lot) part of the money to help her with college to become a doctor. Ruth stayed out of it all, she didn't care about the money because she respected that it was Mama's money, and she disliked the fact that Walter Lee was planning with the money that wasn't his.

In the family, there are a lot of discussions and arguments between the members. Ruth and Walter lee first had an argument for Mama;s money coming in. And then, Mama with Beneatha about her disrespecting religion in mama's house. And Ruth and Mama talked about the money coming in and other things

well basically, i love how Travis wanted to be dependable on his own because he knew his parents couldn't afford to give him money so he recommends to his family that he could carry groceries after school in order to get the the fifty-cents (50)his teacher asked him to turn in.[ the 1950s 50 cents was worth way more than what it is worth today] so in order to assure his son that they're not broke Walter (Travis's dad) gives him a dollar to make him happy and to impress his wife but on his way to work he ends up asking his wife(Ruth) for fifty-cents to board a cab to work.
sincerely,

In Act 1 Scene 2 , we meet other characters such as Ruth and Walter and Walter only cares about violating Ruth and his eggs. Ruth and Walter seem to constantly argue and he disobeys her by doing certain things, certain things such as for example is giving money to Travis after Ruth already says no to him. Mama has gotten money from her husband dying and Walter wants the money to open a liquor store but Benetha wants to go to college and Mama will end up pursuing that as she says.

i learned in 1959 people had to work hard for 50 cents and 50 cents was big back at the time it was basically you was carrying 30 dollars with you. Travis had to help with groceries to earn that 50 cents every day because his parents couldn't afford to give him any money.

I read up to page 39 it was a really good book because they all discuss what a typical family would sometimes discuss which could be what they would of liked to be, or what they want for their family. This leads me to believe that even back then everyone just wants something to prove themselves to others whether it be money, a job, ect. That's what everyone strives for.

The setting of the book is in the 1940's in Chicago & they finally got the check so now its debating on taking a vacation or investing it in the liquor store. Met Bennie who is Walter's sister, who has a dream in being a doctor but is indecisive on what she wants to do with her life. Also mama passed away & that had a big affect on the family.

In Act 1 Scene 1, we were introduced to a few characters who tell their own story within the story. First we met Ruth, the mother of Travis, wife of Walter, and sister in law of Bennie. Bennie is Walter's sister who wants to be a doctor. The major conflict that arose in the beginning of the book was arrival of the $10,000 to Walter's mother (Mama/ Lena) due to the death of Walter and Bennie's father. Although the money will belong to Lena, Bennie wants it for medical school, Walter wanted it to get a license to start a liquor business, and Ruth wanted Lena to keep the money and do what she wanted with it. All in all, this has caused a lot of bickering, especially between Walter and Bennie.

So basically what i read so far in this book is how Ruth is tired of being poor, and she seems like she always argue with Walter about money, she seems like she saw Walter give Travis the 50 cents it seems like she was mad and could of used those for something maybe more valuable, like food. She bugs Walter about him eating his eggs because she probably worked hard to get them. Walter is in another state of mind he thinking because he going to start a business hes going to be all this money, and Ruth thinks the opposite.opposite. There's a check coming for Mama and Ruth want to know what shes going do with that check. Mama is going to say some money for Bennie for her nursing school that she wants to do. And Ruth suggest that Mama should go on a trip, but mama doesn't want to. And Bennie is also on something else because she goes out with a guy name George and he's rich and is a nice guy. i wonder why doeskin Bennie ask George for money for nursing school if he really likes her and he really likes him?

what i learned in act 1 scene 1 is that back in the day money was a different amount then it is now, with the money that i get now back then i would be one of the riches men on earth. Something else that i learned was that Walter and Ruth are always fighting with each other

I found the book very interesting. The family was struggling with money. Lena had a big check coming in and Walter needed money to put into his business. Beneatha wanted the money for college. They was all arguing with eachother over money issues because they all needed money for themselves but at the same time none of them had it. Ruth does not want walter to start another business because the one before he did not accomplish.

Raisin in the sun, talks about the struggle of the youngers family, who lived in the south portion of Chicago. After Mr. Walter youngers died he left the family an amount of $10,000, in the beginning of the story Walter and Ruth argue over Ruth not wanting to give their son 50 cents his school trip, and also how Ruth acts like she is tired of everything that the family is going through. Ruth and Walter argues a lot. About the money mentioned earlier, Walter wants it to invest in a liquor store, and Beneatha wants to pay her tuition, but mama decided to buy a house with it in a white neighborhood and later on the family discovered that Ruth was pregnant.

A Raisin in the Sun is about the a poor African American family living on the south side of Chicago. The character introduced so far are Travis, Mama, Ruth, Walter, Beneatha, and just recently Asagai. We are immediately shown that the family are in a poor financial state by their living arrangements and poorly educated by their way of speaking. Beneatha is the independent, go-getter who speaks her mind sister of Travis and daughter of Mama. While Ruth is the wife of Walter and mother of Travis, and in law of Mama and Beneatha. In the book we see each character wants to achieve a dream of some sort whether its owning a liquor store or wanting to be a doctor.
In act 1 Scene 2 we also see more of who the characters really are. For example, we see Walter is is tired and aggravated by being "bullied" by the women of the household. He knows whats best for his family, which in his mind is investing in a liquor store with his dead father's insurance money his mother will be receiving. He is constantly expressing his emotions through anger by screaming at Ruth, his sister or Mama. To me, this shows that Walter has a dream that is being pushed by the people around him, making him desperate. In act 1 scene 2 we also see Beneath interact with another character other than the ones in her family, Asagai which she seems to have a romantic interest in and could or could not be her teacher in school. We see that Benetha is also insecure in a sense in which she is told by Asagai that her hair being straight is not part of her culture, and immediately agrees and changes her hair. We also see how Ruth is pregnant and may be hiding something from the rest of the family that we later find out in the end of act 1 scene 2. Mama is seen to be the authority of the household advising everyone what they can and can not do. For example, she denies Walter the money to open a liquor store and doesn't wanna hear another word about it along with telling him that Ruth is pregnant and may be plotting to get an abortion and he, as the man must stop it, and then Ruth comes in and saids she has already put a downpayment and Mama goes on to give a speech to Walter about how she's waiting at the moment for him to stand up and show her that he has been brought up right by her. Overall, this book has various themes and lessons that I can already learn from, and I look forward to whats next.
